Until recently, these conditions were difficult and time–consuming to treat. EMDR is considered a breakthrough therapy because of its simplicity and potential to provide lasting relief from most types of emotional stress.
The EMDR technique uses a natural function of the body, rapid eye movement, as its basis. The human mind uses REM during sleep to help process daily emotional experiences. When trauma is extreme, this process breaks down and REM stops providing relief from distress.
EMDR can be thought of as an advanced stage of REM processing. As troubling images are processed by the brain via the eye-movement pattern of EMDR, patients can find resolution of personal issues and achieve a more peaceful state is mind.
